With less than 24 hours until the start of The Nines conference there were over 8,500 people registered according to the email I got from the conference on the 8th.
Yet, just days ago when I registered upon hearing about the conference myself on twitter from @ajvan I believe there were just a few thousand confirmed according to the confirmation page I was taken to upon filling out the registration form. (Since blogging I revisited the confirmation page I saved when registering and see there was 3,100 on August 24th registered to attend the conference.)
I don't have access to the official records, but today I think I witnessed the power of the social media hub Twitter to spread news faster than email, facebook or myspace do combined.
If your church, ministry, business or organization is not on Twitter you can benefit greatly from being on it in spreading news about your organization or event fast. Simply get on and find followers in your target by looking up other leaders in your market, niche or focus and start following their followers. You won't want to add more than a 100 or 200 people than who are following you though as this can be seen negatively by Twitter users and or as possible spam or anti-social. As people start to follow you - then you can add more followers and start to follow back others too. Simply engage with other users and invest in the dialogs that develop.
The great thing about Twitter is that unlike email, facebook and myspace it is easy for groups or circles to merge and or for news to spread outside of them faster. This is part of why it works so well. Very few of my followers were people I knew before I got on Twitter and most of my new followers are outside my circles and networks of people I know, but we have a common connection in being Christian leaders in many ways.
I do not have time to go into detail on what I have learned in observing the use of Twitter for The Nines conference, but I can tell you it is unlike anything I have ever seen and I certainly understand why so many people in the media are touting twitter as being such a phenomenon that is going to change the internet.
As I am seeking to fill multiple purposes through the use of Twitter for DLM I have found the site to be very useful. What ever your vision, dream or goal - you are likely going to need and or will benefit from having the right people to help you in that process. I'm using Twitter to meet and interact with multiple circles, groups and people outside my circle and or network of people I know. You can do the same and it's very easy to do with Twitter. You can follow me on twitter @epicwalk.
