Lifemap: September 2009 Archives

everygreat.jpgDo you have a God vision? What is a God vision? Those are good questions and for the past two days I worked on a blog entry about God vision. Last night in a pit and feeling what I had wrote was junk I deleted it and went to bed. I had a lot, but I didn't feel it was right and didn't carry what I wanted to communicate.

The thing about a real God vision is just like any vision - it's hard. The one thing different about a God vision from a man vision is supernatural power at work to help carry it to fulfillment.

But, is super natural power from God through enough to carry out a God vision?

Honestly, I can thing of arguments and points for both sides of that question. Yes, God is all powerful and all knowing. Yet, does everyone who has come to faith in Jesus Christ actually live out and fulfill the God vision they were to fulfill and live out?

I have a fortune cookie saying I found in a cookie years ago on a day much like yesterday, it said, "Every truly great accomplishment is at first impossible." Thats pretty smart insight for man's wisdom. I still have that slip today stuck in the corner of a picture in my room so I am reminded of that often.

What I'd like to do is open this up and ask for feedback. I have a pounding headache today and I don't want to just "wing" this. Sometimes the best way to go about doing something is by asking questions. Let's see what everyone has on this. If you are reading this via email then you will need to come to my blog to leave a comment.
popsnson.gifYesterday, I and over 10,000 people logged on to watch The Nines Christian leadership conference on-line. I've read multiple reviews of it and I've already blogged twice about it. I watched the twitter feed yesterday and this morning to see everyone's comments regarding it.

I had no desire to blog on it again and had moved on, but then I tweeted with a brother earlier today who shared how he was overwhelmed by it all and felt like just giving up on being a leader. That struck something in me and if others are feeling the same way perhaps I can help encourage them in sharing this.

You may have been inspired or you may have overwhelmed or even disappointed from the Nines conference, but how did you view most if not all of those who shared their 9 minute message? Always ask yourself what you are thinking about what you are observing because our thoughts can be tricky and are not always our own.

I think I make a correct assumption that the word "peer" is not one of the words that comes to mind - at least not a peer like you see most of the peers around you. Which isn't surprising because the marketing did not condition that mindset. Which of course is understandable because it would be difficult to draw 10,000 people to a venue on leadership without conditioning a mindset of expectation from "top" leaders. What I think we all failed to realize was the result was pressure on speakers to perform and live up to that expectation along with us attendee's expecting it.

Depending where you are at in your spiritual journey this then produced a wide range of feelings. One thing I have found very liberating in ministry is to intentionally not let myself fall into the I must perform.. live up.. deliver.. strive.. etc mindset. That mindset withered the fruit of the spirit in my life and ministry and was toxic to my heart and relationship with the Lord. I never want to be more like the wizard behind the curtain than the characters living the adventure walking the yellow brick road.

I remember years ago when I was sharing my passion for ministry before I was ever given the vision for this ministry. I was at a retreat and just out of college at 23 and was sharing with a man maybe 10 years older than me at the time. After I finished sharing he told me wow I am impressed and your going to really make a difference in the world. I was somewhat shocked and taken back by what he said and I asked why do you say that? To which he told me something I have never forgot. Everyone else here is talking about all these great big ministries and dreams and goals, but you are talking about how you have helped individuals and I see your passion from that and they have in turn gone on to minister to others. Most people dream big and think of large ministries and big accomplishments, but you really care about people and helping them so much they are compelled to then go help others. That's that's rare people live and think like that and that's revolutionary.

It was about two years after that when God gave me the vision for this ministry. He didn't give it all to me at once and rightfully so because I would not have had the faith to step out in it. God began to reveal a small part of a big vision and has since then brought me closer to that mountain. It didn't look so big at first, but the closer the Lord has brought me to it - the more I can see on that mountain.

So to my friend who was overwhelmed by the Nines. Don't worry, ministry and walking with God is much like us as a young boy (or girl) with our feet in the ocean right beside our dad. He is there with us and we are not the father, but the son (or daughter). We don't have to be the teenager trying to act like we know it all, but we can and rightfully should be the young son who trusts his father. Even if we later realize we made mistakes and didn't know better along the way - we can be like the young son (or daughter) in our underpants splashing our feet in the ocean right beside our Father. As time goes on our Father will father us and we will grow through the stages of life, but those are stages of maturity and growth we must journey through with the Lord.

So where ever you find your walk with the Lord in ministry - remember your father is right there beside you.

Where does the supernatural power of God have a real place? What difference would it make practically between the way we worked yesterday, and the way we would work today, and tomorrow? What difference would it make in the majority of Christians' practical work and plans. Aren't most plans laid out ahead of time? Isn't much work done by human talent, energy, and clever ideas? Where does the supernatural power of God have a real place?

-Francis & Edith Schaeffer

The more deeply I dig beneath the surface of church growth principles, the more thoroughly convinced I become that the real battle is a spiritual battle and that our principle weapon is prayer.

-Spurgeon

I am quite confident apart from prayer and an encounter with the presence of God in which he surprised me when I did not expect it nor particularly desired it I would never have been given nor trusted with the vision for this ministry in March of 2005.

I am also quite confident that apart from the continued prayer of those prayer warriors elected by God who have so faithfully prayed for me and this ministry and continued to have faith God will carry through what He started that I would have long ago lost hope and given up in the pursuit of this ministry vision.

Yet, I know there is far more yet to be done and much that has not and will not happen until a movement of God takes place within and through this ministry. That simply can not happen apart from the continued prayer of those God has called to pray for this ministry and me.

So as the Schaeffer 's asked..

Where does the supernatural power of God have a real place?

What difference would it make practically between the way we worked yesterday, and the way we would work today, and tomorrow?

Is this a question you have an answer to in your life as well?

I have to ask myself these very questions often. My skills, talents, gifts and abilities are not enough to establish, build and advance a ministry vision of this kind. I've known that since the first year of this ministry - this is not a vision that can be built apart from God or with clever ministry marketing and organizational methods of growth.

Human method's will only produce human results.

What difference would it (the supernatural power of God) make in the majority of Christians' practical work and plans?

Has it made a difference in your work and plans today?

This week?

This month?

This year?

This decade?

I must agree whole heartedly with Spurgeon that the real battle is a spiritual battle and that our principle weapon is prayer. The real advancement of the Kingdom into darkness will only come about in large movements by prayer.
why.gifWe all have questions for God we would like to ask Him. Many of us have questions about God we would like answered. Yet, only recently have I come to the realization that I have never given any thought to the questions I don't have for God.

The lack of having questions from a result of having satisfaction in regards to them is an immense blessing I've been blinded to. In coming to realize I don't have many of those hard questions I once did and some I have never had - I will never look at things the same again. I will have more questions in life but in considering the questions I don't have and have satisfaction with - the questions I don't have answered have become easier to trust God with.

The questions I am referring to are those with deep roots within the heart and mind that yearn to be satisfied and need to be - to grow in depth and intimacy with God. They are not questions we can ignore or trick ourselves into believing we have satisfied when they are not. They are not even questions we can trick ourselves into thinking we do not have. They are questions we can not subdue and ignore for they will hinder the heart's ability to love, obey and trust God. They are questions that will cause us pain and effect our life if we ignore them.

Yet, these are also the questions that those following Christ may not feel comfortable asking peers, church staff or family about. While they are not something to be ashamed of or feel bad for having - you must be discerning in who you share them with. We live in a fallen world of imperfect people and even some Christians may hurt you in asking them such questions by disregarding, ignoring or scolding you for asking them.

But, I am certain they are none the less questions you can not ignore and that need satisfaction. You may not get the answer you want in seeking God and asking Him, but they are ones that God does give satisfaction in regards to when you seek Him for those answers. It may not be a instant result of satisfaction but if you stay honest and transparent with God in seeking the answers He is always found by those who seek Him.

visionhill.jpgTo impact people with your ministry or organization's vision they must be able to see and grasp it much like you yourself did. If you did not go through a process to get your vision you would lack the passion you have for it too.

It is easier to find help sowing something when others have clarity on what you are sowing.

There is a direct correlation in the fulfillment of your vision to the level of which others grasp and see that vision too. There is no better way to find people to help you in your vision than those who are first impacted by it.

I should make it clear that I do not wish to make a process God tends to use and work through into a system or method of any kind.

This is not a 5 step process or program and within it the process will differ for each person. There will be things in ministry vision people will not spiritually be able to see apart from a movement of God - so you must be praying as well being intentional in helping others see the vision you have been given. Those you help and impact through your vision will likely find a passion ignited in them to help you more than most people are going to have to help you.

Before you start pursuing a vision count the cost. It will not be easy and will be hard. Starting and then burning out is a very painful process to go through. I highly suggest walking through the lifemap model process for a few years before starting into a vision God has given you unless God has made it very clear you are to start now. When I started into this ministry I asked God for a sign and prayed for affirmation and was given it 7 days in a row. In all honesty I was scared and did not want to start this unless I was certain God was leading me in it. I had failed before and it was a painful experience.

If God has given you a vision it is a direct threat to the other side. Your vision will free, impact and change lives for eternity if God has given it to you. The enemy will try to thwart your vision the moment you begin to pursue it - it's easier to stop something before it begins. It will be a lonely and hard 6-24+ months when you begin and those you expect to support you in it - will not. You will find discouragement from people you expected encouragement from. These are all normal and being prepared for them ahead of time will help you stay the course and lessen the dissapointment.

In our era of Christianity we are largely influenced by the instant now and fast paced culture around us. If something does not happen in a month or the first year of pursuing it we often give up and assume it isn't supposed to happen or it is not God's will.

It is rare we find examples of those who pursed a vision or dream for 10-20 years before God began to move in fulfilling it. Staying in the course of something that long and sowing with very little harvest is not going to be easy nor doable apart from a heart alive in Christ.

Your heart must be fully alive having come to know and experience God's love to find joy in the pursuit of a vision or dream God has given you. That does not mean you have the perfect walk with God nor have great talents and gifts developed, but merely that your heart is alive in God and has a deep trust and love of God.

Your mind must be renewed to stay focused. You must be able to discern and defend from a renewed mind the things in life that will take out your heart.

If there are areas in your life you do not trust God in it is because those doubts have come from things that your mind saw and sees as God not coming through for you. A renewed mind that discerns and defends against the lies of the world and the enemy is a must have to stay on focus and to save you from getting very hurt down the road from what you may mistake as God letting you down. God does not let us down, but the enemy and the world around us will deal painful cards throughout life and a renewed mind is a requirement to staying alive in God from the depth of your heart.

A heart that is taken out will not sustain a 10 year journey to the fulfillment of your vision. You must have it to start and maintain it to stay the course.

If you are finding a curiosity and desire awakened within you about this process I highly suggest reading the Journey of Desire by John Eldredge.

It will reach deep within your heart and touch on painful parts buried deep within your heart that are skewing your view of God and or of which are areas that you have come to not want to give to God or don't trust Him in. The book is slower in the middle so you have to push through it, but it is a good book to start a process within your heart.

Have you started the pursuit of a vision God gave you? How did you come to know it was God speaking to you in it? Have you given up on a vision you started to pursue? Was it because God told you to stop or was it because of obstacles that came and you grew discouraged?
